The study found that consuming grapes was associated with increased diversity of bacteria in the gut, as well as reductions in certain cholesterol measures and bile acids involved in cholesterol metabolism. These findings add to the growing body of research on grapes, gut health and heart health.
How grapes may support gut health
The human gut contains a complex community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome. In the clinical study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, healthy participants consumed the equivalent of approximately 1.5 cups of grapes per day for four weeks, while following a low-fibre, low-polyphenol diet. After four weeks, researchers observed an increase in microbial diversity, measured using the Shannon index.
Grapes and beneficial gut bacteria
One of the bacteria that increased was Akkermansia, a microorganism of interest for its potential relationship with glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism and intestinal barrier function. The findings suggest grapes may influence the composition of the gut microbiome. More research is needed to understand long-term effects.
Grapes and cholesterol
After four weeks, researchers observed reductions in several cholesterol measurements. Bile acids play an important role in the digestion and metabolism of fats and are closely connected to cholesterol metabolism. These results provide additional evidence for research into grape consumption and cardiovascular health.
Why grapes are considered a healthy fruit
Grapes naturally contain a variety of nutrients and plant compounds, including polyphenols. Their composition has made grapes an ongoing subject of research into antioxidant activity, cardiovascular health and metabolic health. Including a variety of fruit in a balanced diet is an important part of healthy eating.
What the research means
The findings do not mean that grapes should be considered a treatment for high cholesterol or other medical conditions. Rather, they contribute to the broader scientific understanding of how fruit consumption and dietary compounds may interact with the gut and cardiovascular system.
